Do We Have Full Freedom of Speech?

In a free society, there can be no justification of lies or half-truths, no matter how they are covered: war or attempt to be such very patriotic Ukrainians. Unfortunately, the situation with freedom of speech is worsening in Ukraine, which attaches particular importance to Civil Lyceum II on the theme: ‘Freedom of speech in terms of security challenges: why cannot we limit it’, where Studrespublika together with the newspaper The ‘New Republic’ will hold on May 19, 2018 in Kyiv. The offensive on liberty is, unfortunately, a reality in Ukraine. This is no keep silent, but there are those, who justify it. Republicans consistently pay attention to the need in ensure freedom of speech. For the second time, the dialogue about this theme with the participation of activists, experts, journalists, media men will be held in the format of the Civil Lyceum. Details — below.

Prisoners of freedom of speech is very important public problem, it is need public attention, discussing and solving. Violence (up to murders) against journalists, lack of quality investigation of such facts, the imprisonment of critically acclaimed journalists, withdrawal of licenses, pressure, threats and harassment of media and journalists, who criticize government or have alternative thoughts, trying to control the Internet, manifestations of (self) censorship, presence of propaganda — all these are sad reality of informational field of Ukraine on all it constitutional territory.

It should be emphasized, that in our time the offensive on freedom of speech is exist on all world, post-truth and fake are reality even western countries and the so-called examples of democracy.

This is evidenced not only by the experiences of our lives and news stories, but also reports from reputable international organizations.

While the history of mankind claims, that free media, protected human rights (without exceptions), critically minded citizens and professional journalists, opportunity to engage in citizen journalism and respect for the opposition are architectural details of a developed society and an effective state, in the focus of which are the interests of every person. This requires civic enlightenment.

Civil Lyceum — important initiative of Studrespublika, which gather of activists, experts, young leaders and indifferent citizens for dialogue about innovative development of Ukraine and own self-realization in new difficult conditions, about development of person and universal values. Format of events — intensive Lyceum in regime of presentations of problems’ positions as reports of experts with discussing.

Civil Lyceum II: ‘Freedom of speech in the context of security challenges: why cannot we limit it’ will May 19, from 12:30 to 20:00 hours (the registration begins at 12:00) in Ukrainian News Agency (20 Esplanadna Street, Kyiv). Participation is open to progressive citizens, scientists, journalists, media men, the activists, bloggers and students, etc. You have to register online first. Number of seats is limited!
